Authentic Fibers for Lasting Spaces
🌿 Breakdown of the Materials
Bamboo: A fast-growing woody grass. Artisans split its hollow stems into fine slivers to weave sturdy baskets, mats, kitchen tools, and lampshades.
Cane: The peeled outer skin or thin stems of climbing palms (rotan). It is highly flexible and commonly used to weave tight, breathable mesh patterns for chair seats and cabinet doors.
Rattan: The solid, thick inner stem of the same climbing palm. Because it is solid, it can be steamed and bent into strong, structural frames for furniture like sofas, tables, and swings.
Water Hyacinth: An aquatic weed harvested from water bodies. The fibrous stems are dried in the sun, flattened, and braided into thick, soft, and chunky ropes used for storage bins, rugs, and tote bags.
Sitalpati (or Shitalpati): A traditional mat-weaving craft originating from parts of West Bengal, Assam, and Bangladesh. It uses the green, glossy outer layers of the Murta plant (Schumannianthus dichotomus) to create fine, smooth mats that are naturally cool to the touch.
